Roland Corporation has released Melody Flip, a creative tool designed to spark fresh ideas in music production.
Rather than automatically generating complete songs, Melody Flip serves as a “music creation partner” that helps creators discover new musical ideas, select them in line with their own artistic sensibilities, and develop them into original works. Combining Roland’s decades of expertise in musical instruments and music production technology with the research insights of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (Sony CSL), Melody Flip supports one of the most challenging aspects of music production, finding that initial spark of inspiration.
A Creative Music Production Experience
In music production, figuring out where to begin can sometimes be a bigger challenge than mastering techniques or learning how to use equipment. Melody Flip addresses this creative hurdle by offering music patterns called Palettes as a starting point and providing inspiration based on users’ favorite songs. Creators can audition, select, and experiment with music while freely choosing and editing the melody and accompaniment ideas suggested by the Melody Flip to develop their own unique songs.
Expanding Musical Possibilities from Palettes
Melody Flip includes approximately 250 different Palettes. Each Palette serves as a library of musical ideas comprising four parts: melody, chords, bass, and drums. By selecting a Palette that that catches interest, users open the door to discovering new grooves and styles. The feature encourages experimentation beyond familiar creative habits and can serve as a catalyst for discovering new artistic directions.
Discover New Ideas from Favourite Songs
When an audio file of a song is imported, Melody Flip analyzes the song’s structure, tempo, key, chord progression, genre, mood, and other musical characteristics. It then suggests related melodies and accompaniment patterns that capture aspects of the song’s overall musical feel*. Rather than replicating existing music, the feature is designed to inspire original creativity and help users uncover new musical possibilities. Creators can generate and explore ideas repeatedly, choosing the directions that resonate most with their artistic direction.
*Utilises research findings and technologies from Sony CSL’s Music Information Retrieval (MIR) field.
From Initial Ideas to Finished Productions
In addition to generating melodies, Melody Flip can also export backing parts for chords, bass, and drums. The melodies and individual parts can be used as audio or MIDI files and imported directly into major digital audio workstations (DAWs) for further editing and production. This streamlined workflow supports the entire creative process, from initial sketches and demos to fully developed musical productions.
Melody Flip is compatible with macOS and Windows.
